Pakistan’s transition toward next-generation mobile connectivity is gaining momentum, with telecom operators investing approximately $178.6 million in the country’s 5G rollout, according to data shared by the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT).
The investment has already supported the upgrade of 1,136 mobile sites to 5G across Pakistan, highlighting the telecom industry’s efforts to expand high-speed connectivity following the country’s 5G spectrum auction in March 2026.
The development marks an important stage in Pakistan’s digital transformation as operators begin moving beyond the initial launch of 5G services toward broader network deployment.
Zong Leads 5G Infrastructure Investment
According to the ministry’s data, Zong has made the largest reported investment in 5G infrastructure so far.
Zong invested approximately $98.9 million up to June 2026, while Jazz contributed around $59.67 million. Ufone’s investment was estimated at approximately $20 million during the same period.

The figures show that operators are continuing to commit significant capital to 5G infrastructure even after the spectrum auction has concluded.
Operators Plan Further Investment in 2027
The telecom industry’s investment in Pakistan’s 5G infrastructure is expected to continue during the next fiscal year.
Zong has projected an additional $39.9 million investment for FY2027, while Jazz expects to invest approximately $30.33 million during the same period. Ufone’s FY2027 investment figures have not yet been finalized because the company is completing merger-related activities.
The additional spending could support further site upgrades, network expansion and improvements in the quality and availability of 5G services.
Pakistan’s 5G Spectrum Auction Set the Stage
The investment follows Pakistan’s landmark 5G spectrum auction, which took place in March 2026.
The auction offered spectrum across multiple frequency bands, including 700 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz, 2600 MHz and 3500 MHz.
A total of 480 MHz of spectrum was sold, generating approximately $509.6 million for the national exchequer. Jazz acquired 190 MHz, Ufone secured 180 MHz and Zong obtained 110 MHz.
The auction provided operators with additional spectrum needed to begin commercial 5G deployment and improve mobile broadband capacity.
5G Services Officially Launched in Pakistan
Pakistan officially entered the commercial 5G era in March 2026 when Jazz, Ufone and Zong received their 5G licenses and began launching services in selected locations.
Jazz initially activated 5G across approximately 180 sites in major cities including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, Quetta, Multan and Faisalabad.
Zong also launched 5G services in more than 16 cities and announced plans to deploy or upgrade more than 1,000 5G sites nationwide during 2026.
The rollout is being implemented in phases rather than through an immediate nationwide switch.
No Mandatory FDI Target Was Set
An important aspect of the latest investment figures is that the government did not impose a specific foreign direct investment target on telecom operators for the 5G rollout.
The government’s Policy Directive for the 2026 spectrum auction, issued on January 6, did not require operators to meet a particular FDI commitment for deploying 5G infrastructure.
Despite this, operators have committed hundreds of millions of dollars to expanding next-generation connectivity.
This suggests that telecom companies see sufficient long-term commercial potential in Pakistan’s growing demand for mobile data and digital services.
1,136 Sites Have Already Been Upgraded
The upgrade of 1,136 sites represents an important step in moving Pakistan’s 5G deployment beyond the initial commercial launch.
However, the number of upgraded sites does not mean that 5G is already available nationwide.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has indicated that 5G services are being introduced gradually, with availability depending on network readiness, location and compatible devices.
The government is also compiling more detailed province-wise infrastructure information, including data concerning fiber connectivity and 5G upgrades.
What 5G Could Mean for Pakistan
The expansion of 5G could have implications far beyond faster smartphone downloads.
Higher speeds, lower latency and greater network capacity could support applications involving artificial intelligence, cloud computing, industrial automation, smart cities, Internet of Things devices and advanced digital services.

Network expansion requires substantial infrastructure spending, fiberization and compatible equipment. Consumers also need 5G-capable smartphones to take advantage of the new networks.
Moreover, 5G availability remains dependent on individual locations and operator coverage.
Recent parliamentary discussions have also highlighted concerns about the quality of existing internet and mobile services, suggesting that operators will need to improve both 5G and existing 4G networks as deployment continues.
Pakistan’s 5G Expansion Enters a New Phase
The $178.6 million investment made by telecom operators demonstrates that Pakistan’s 5G rollout is moving beyond the licensing and spectrum-auction stage.
With more than 1,100 sites already upgraded and additional investment planned for FY2027, the next phase will focus increasingly on expanding coverage and improving the quality of services.
Zong, Jazz and Ufone are now competing to build stronger next-generation networks, while the government and PTA continue to oversee the phased deployment.
If investment and infrastructure expansion continue at the current pace, 5G could become an increasingly important part of Pakistan’s digital economy and telecommunications landscape.
