The Punjab government has sanctioned Rs 1.10 billion for the acquisition of advanced computed tomography (CT) scanners across three major public sector hospitals. The procurement initiative is aimed at modernizing diagnostic facilities and boosting healthcare delivery capacity within the province.
Breakdown of Diagnostic Equipment Funding
According to information released by the provincial Health Department, the capital expenditure targets critical diagnostic bottlenecks in major specialized and emergency units. The largest single portion of the sanctioned funds, amounting to Rs 500 million, has been allocated to the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) in Lahore. This funding will support the purchase of a whole-body multi-ultra-fast CT scanner specifically configured for cardiac scans.
An additional Rs 300 million has been earmarked for Lahore General Hospital (LGH). The capital will be utilized to replace an outdated imaging unit currently situated in the facility’s Emergency Department with a new 128-slice CT scanner, improving rapid diagnostic capability for acute care admissions.
The remaining Rs 300 million has been allocated to Benazir Bhutto Hospital in Rawalpindi. Similar to the upgrade at Lahore General Hospital, these funds will go toward procuring a 128-slice CT scanner to serve patients in the northern region of the province.
Administrative Clearance and Policy Framework
Punjab Health Secretary Azmat Mahmood granted official administrative approval for all three procurement projects. Officials noted that the acquisitions align with strategic directives set by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, whose administration has prioritized public welfare initiatives and multi-billion-rupee health sector developments.
Reaffirming the provincial administration’s objectives, Mahmood stated that the government remains focused on expanding access to high-quality healthcare facilities and delivering contemporary diagnostic technology to the general public across Punjab.
