Google Confirms Fix for Nest Devices Hit by Daylight Saving Time Glitch

A time adjustment failure in parts of Canada left Nest Hubs and thermostats out of sync, triggering missed alarms and disrupted smart home routines.

Google is working to deploy a software fix for Google Nest devices that failed to adjust properly to recent Daylight Saving Time transitions. The issue, which impacts smart displays and thermostats in select regions, has led to time-keeping errors that disrupt daily schedules and connected device routines.

Disrupted Schedules and Broken Automations

Reports of the malfunction surfaced across online communities, including Reddit, where owners of the Google Nest Hub and Nest Thermostat discovered their devices were suddenly displaying the incorrect local time. Because smart displays and thermostats act as operational hubs for the home, the consequences extended beyond a visual discrepancy on the clock face.

Affected users reported concrete operational issues, including late morning wake-up alarms, altered thermostat temperature routines, and delayed or broken home automations. For households relying on smart speakers and displays to trigger timed events throughout the morning, the one-hour offset caused immediate friction.

Rooted in Canadian Regional Time Changes

The time-sync failure appears specifically tied to shifts in regional time policies across Canada. Recent legislative and administrative variations left some Canadian provinces choosing to forgo the standard Daylight Saving Time adjustment, while other provinces continued to observe the seasonal shift as usual.

While Google previously published user guidance detailing how to handle the regional time zone changes on Android smartphones, applying similar adjustments to Nest smart home devices is significantly less straightforward. Nest devices generally rely on automatic network configuration and location services rather than easily accessible manual time-setting toggles, complicating manual workarounds for consumers.

Google Acknowledges Issue and Promises Solution

Google addressed the problem in an official statement, confirming that a software resolution is in development to correct the time display and restore normal scheduling functions.

“Google is aware of an issue affecting a small subset of devices in some provinces in Canada where daylight savings is no longer observed. We apologize for any inconvenience and are actively working on a fix,” the company stated.

Google customer support channels also replied directly to several affected device owners to confirm that an update is in the pipeline. However, as of November 4, the software correction had not yet rolled out to resolve the synchronization bug for all affected hardware.
