Text-Based AI Assistants Expand Beyond Dedicated Apps

A wave of autonomous software agents is embedding directly into iMessage, WhatsApp, and SMS to handle daily tasks without requiring separate app downloads.

A growing segment of artificial intelligence software is shifting away from standalone smartphone applications, integrating instead directly into everyday messaging channels. Rather than requiring users to open dedicated interfaces, these autonomous agents operate inside standard text threads, including SMS, Apple iMessage, Android RCS, WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal. By conversing naturally inside existing message streams, the tools are designed to remember contextual history, access connected accounts, and complete real-world actions such as booking appointments, making phone calls, placing orders, and coordinating family logistics.

High-Valuation General Assistants Enter the Inbox

General-purpose personal assistants make up a prominent share of the emerging messaging landscape, highlighted by massive capital inflows. Leading the category in capitalization is Instinct, which reached a $10 billion valuation following a $1 billion funding round in September 2026, after previously raising $350 million at a $2.5 billion valuation. Communicating via voice and text, Instinct links to platforms such as Google Workspace to plan itineraries, purchase groceries, and cancel subscriptions. In September, the platform introduced dedicated email addresses for user assistants to interact with third parties and manage accounts autonomously, a development that also introduced privacy and security questions alongside new support for making direct phone calls.

Other startups are also targeting general everyday assistance. Poke, launched in March 2026, achieved approval as the first AI agent on the Apple Messages for Business platform before its parent firm, The Interaction Company of California, was acquired by AI coding firm Cognition in a low nine-figure transaction. Tab emerged from stealth in October with a $300 million valuation backed by SV Angel, Valar Ventures, and American Spirit, allowing users on iMessage and WhatsApp to delegate errands such as gift purchases and grocery orders. Similarly, Caddy entered public beta in April 2026 across iMessage and RCS, parsing conversations and calendars to extract follow-up items and schedule events without forcing users to manage an additional inbox.

Alternative personal assistants emphasize differing feature sets and pricing tiers. Folk, which launched its beta in May 2026, executes code and multi-step actions across an isolated private cloud environment through iMessage, WhatsApp, and Telegram, offering a Pro subscription at $8.33 per month. Martin connects through SMS, phone calls, WhatsApp, email, Slack, and an iOS app with subscriptions starting at $21 monthly, executing tasks like outbound calls. Meanwhile, Rene pairs text messaging on Telegram, WhatsApp, and iMessage with browsing tools, code generation, and slide creation. Pally integrates Drive, Gmail, and WhatsApp data with plans running up to $100 per month for voice minutes, while Tomo distinguishes itself on iMessage by participating directly within group chats for $19.99 monthly.

Household and Family Management Tools

Family life and household administration have emerged as another major focus for messaging-based AI. Fambot, which launched in beta in September 2026 with $3.5 million in pre-seed funding, operates over SMS and mobile apps. The service aggregates calendars from Google, Outlook, and Gmail to dispatch evening summaries outlining the next day’s schedule, packed items, and school obligations, with plans to eventually price access similarly to a streaming video subscription.

Other household platforms incorporate distinct operational approaches. Ollie, introduced in June 2026, focuses on consolidating school notes, calendars, and group chats while securing SOC 2 compliance, charging between $25 and $100 monthly based on message volume. Orbits, backed by the Andreessen Horowitz Speedrun fund, Garage Capital, and N49P, interacts via text and its native app to request contractor quotes, coordinate chores, and book reservations. Ohai similarly organizes meal plans, chores, and schedules from forwarded messages and voice notes, offering subscriptions starting at $9.99 per month.

Workplace Delegation, Content, and Local Privacy

Beyond personal organization, several agents target specific occupational workflows. In workplace management, Town raised a $55 million Series A led by Andreessen Horowitz and Forerunner in June 2026 for its professional agent, Townie, which learns work patterns across documents, Slack, and email. Comma runs across desktop files, browsers, and remote messaging platforms such as Signal and WeChat, actively checking its own output before requesting user approval. Szn provides centralized coordination over messaging, having logged over 10,000 completed jobs and 95 hours of calls across 7,500 business clients. Iris, powered by Hermes Agent, automates multi-step delegations inside iMessage.

Vertical-specific tools include Miso, which couples iMessage trip planning with human travel team oversight, and Stanley, an agent designed for content creators that drafts captions, plans social schedules, and integrates with Instagram. Wajo launched its consumer agent, Fo, in September 2026, equipping the AI with its own phone number, email, and payment card, while retaining the ability to escalate unresolved requests to human operators.

Addressing the security considerations inherent to autonomous data access, Underdog entered an invite-only beta in October 2026 with a local-first architecture. Bypassing cloud computation, the free, ad-free assistant processes data entirely on Mac and Windows hardware, with smartphone and Linux versions scheduled for future deployment. Signull Labs has also taken an alternative interface path with Skye, an agentic homescreen for iPhone that raised $3.6 million in seed funding to deliver contextual cards and briefings directly on the device.
