Early reviews of Apple’s new iPhone Duo underscored an immediate hurdle for the foldable device: uneven third-party software support. Early evaluations identified three separate tiers of application behavior, with the lowest tier leaving standard mobile apps stranded directly in the center of the screen, bordered by extensive black margins. In response to these software concerns, Apple announced that developer adoption is accelerating rapidly, pointing to broad ecosystem momentum as the device prepares for its official retail debut.
Addressing Early App Optimization Concerns
The form factor of the iPhone Duo introduces a significant departure from standard smartphone layouts, featuring an expansive inner screen that is 50 percent larger than the display found on the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Alongside its sheer size, the hardware incorporates a nano-texture finish and supports multiple physical orientations, including propped and partially folded tabletop configurations. While these options offer new user interfaces, they also require third-party developers to adapt their layouts to prevent apps from letterboxing or failing to leverage the expanded canvas.
Apple maintains that developers across multiple industries have moved quickly to update their software. “The response to iPhone Duo from our developer community has been incredible, and we’re inspired by how quickly they’ve embraced its larger display and new ways to interact,” said Susan Prescott, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations. Prescott noted that developers are updating software for media consumption, window-based multitasking, and console-quality gaming, adding that Apple plans to highlight optimized titles on the App Store as retail units arrive in customers’ hands.
Streaming Video and Split-Screen Entertainment
Video streaming platforms represent one of the initial categories taking advantage of the folding architecture. Netflix has updated its interface to bridge the gap between the cover screen and the main interior canvas. Subscribers can browse through the platform’s Clips feed on the external screen and subsequently unfold the iPhone Duo to continue playback uninterrupted on the inner display, with the media adapting between vertical and horizontal orientations.
Other major entertainment platforms, including Amazon Prime Video and Paramount+, are joining Apple TV in reconfiguring their players for the larger display. Prime Video introduces specific functionality for partially folded viewing: when the iPhone Duo is placed in a laptop-like pose, video playback automatically shifts to the top vertical half of the screen, while the lower resting half populates with X-Ray metadata showing cast details and bonus production materials. Paramount+ has similarly expanded its interface to incorporate advanced playback controls alongside broader browsing directories for live channels and on-demand programming.
Sports Platforms Adapt to Tabletop Poses
Sports broadcasting software has also adapted to the device’s ability to stand without an external accessory. Both Major League Baseball and the PGA Tour have tailored their apps to support hands-free viewing on flat surfaces, enabling fans to monitor live coverage alongside supplementary information.
The MLB app configuration is timed specifically to accommodate postseason baseball. “Baseball fans are incredibly passionate about the sport, and they follow our games as closely as they can. Now, iPhone Duo provides an exciting new fan engagement platform by showcasing the action and information simultaneously,” said Kenny Gersh, MLB’s executive vice president of Media, Business Development, and Product. Gersh detailed how the app responds to a partially folded device set on a table, placing the live broadcast on the upright display section while real-time box scores and statistical feeds occupy the horizontal bottom half, eliminating the need to toggle between full-screen feeds.
Productivity Updates and Orientation Advice
In the enterprise and productivity sector, several major platforms are preparing substantial overhauls. Apple confirmed that Microsoft Word and Microsoft Outlook will introduce desktop-class experiences over the coming weeks. Updates are also underway for Zoom, Slack, and Salesforce. Zoom will use the expansive inner screen to present conference feeds alongside shared workspace materials simultaneously. Slack will present full workspaces with channel lists and automation tools visible in a single view, while Salesforce is redesigning dashboards to expose broader customer relationship metrics.
Apple also named a wide roster of independent and mainstream apps receiving optimizations, including Fantastical, Notewise, Things, Bear, Detail, Instagram, Edits, and VLLO. For gaming, Apple Arcade releases such as Sneaky Sasquatch and Retrocade have also been adapted to run natively across the hardware.
For consumers testing or purchasing the device, early reviewers suggest rotating the inner screen between portrait and landscape modes when testing different software. Because developer implementations currently vary, certain third-party applications provide a noticeably superior interface depending on the chosen physical orientation.
