Veritas Unveils Next-Generation Anti-Counterfeit Chip for Luxury Goods, Jewelry, and Glassware

The startup, founded by a former Tesla technical product manager, is expanding its hardware authentication system across metals, trophies, and fragrance bottles.

Counterfeiting poses an enduring challenge for global luxury labels and fashion houses, as illicit manufacturers increasingly produce high-grade duplicates known across the retail sector as superfakes. In response to the growing sophistication of imitation goods, authentication startup Veritas has launched the second generation of its embedded verification chip, broadening its reach beyond apparel into hard-surface luxury products, fine jewelry, sports trophies, and glass fragrance bottles.

Engineered Authentication for Complex Materials

Veritas was founded by Luci Holland, a former technical product manager at Tesla who brings an interdisciplinary background spanning technical design and art. The company manufactures specialized physical chips engineered to be integrated directly into manufactured items during production without compromising the structural integrity or aesthetic design of the finished product.

While digital tracking mechanisms have become common in consumer goods, Holland pointed out that many existing systems remain vulnerable to duplication. Static NFC links and standard QR codes can often be duplicated or hosted on external web pages without establishing an unbroken connection to the genuine physical item.

To overcome those vulnerabilities, the Veritas hardware combines physical integration with dynamic digital validation. Each individual chip is designed with an integrated tamper-detection wire and generates a secure cryptographic response upon every scan, linking the physical asset to an immutable digital identity.

Expanding Across Metal Surfaces and Glass

The company announced that the second iteration of its hardware is now production-ready. This new version resolves traditional physical scanning limitations by functioning reliably on metal surfaces and maintaining readability when placed beneath or inside glass materials.

With these technical updates, Veritas can now accommodate a much broader array of luxury and collectible merchandise. Beyond early implementations in garments and flexible textiles, brands can embed the hardware directly into fine jewelry, rigid hard-surface goods, celebratory trophies, and glass containers such as perfume bottles.

Once embedded, brand partners can utilize the system to independently verify product authenticity, while end consumers are granted access to an official certificate of ownership through the company mobile application.

High-Profile Deployments and Athlete Partnerships

Veritas has begun demonstrating its hardware through several high-profile real-world use cases. The company recently entered into an official partnership with ATHLOS, the women’s track-and-field competition established by Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, who is also an early investor in the authentication startup. Under this partnership, all 18 ATHLOS championship crowns are fitted with embedded Veritas chips to guarantee provenance and prevent unauthorized reproduction.

In another demonstration of provenance tracking, the company integrated its chip into a bespoke pair of LeBron James’ first Nike signature sneakers, customized by artist Adam Port. By tapping an NFC-enabled smartphone against the sneaker, owners and viewers can immediately access an interactive record detailing the shoe’s history, artistic background, and provenance.

Backing and Enterprise Platform Rollout

Veritas has secured $1.75 million in pre-seed venture capital funding to date. That financing round was led by Alexis Ohanian’s venture firm Seven Seven Six, with additional backing from DoorDash co-founder Stanley Tang, Reys skincare co-founder Gloria Zhu, and former technology journalist and venture investor Josh Constine.

Following its initial funding milestone in February, Veritas expanded its software footprint alongside its physical hardware developments. The company deployed an iOS mobile application for end consumers and introduced an enterprise portal tailored for brand partners.

The enterprise platform allows corporate clients to monitor authentic product inventories, maintain ownership ledgers, and design post-purchase engagement workflows. Through the software layer, participating brands can distribute gated perks, including exclusive customer club memberships, physical event check-in capabilities, and segmented early access privileges for limited-edition merchandise drops. Veritas also showcased its technology as a participant in the Startup Battlefield competition at TechCrunch Disrupt.
