Sony Cancels Planned Android 17 Update for Xperia 10 VI

Sony has retracted its promise to bring three major OS upgrades to the midrange Xperia 10 VI, citing hardware storage limitations.

Sony has officially announced that its midrange Xperia 10 VI smartphone will no longer receive an update to Android 17, walking back an earlier software support pledge made when the device was first introduced.

When the Xperia 10 VI debuted over two years ago, the handset launched running Android 14 and was powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 processor. At the time of its release, Sony committed to providing three major operating system updates throughout the lifecycle of the device. Under that original roadmap, the phone was scheduled to receive updates culminating in the release of Android 17.

Storage Limitations Cited

The reversal came to light via an official notice published on Sony’s UK support portal. According to the company, engineering evaluations revealed that the smartphone’s internal hardware could not adequately handle the upcoming operating system release.

In the published statement, Sony explained that a detailed technical assessment showed limitations related to the device’s storage configuration. The manufacturer stated that these constraints mean the Xperia 10 VI cannot support an Android 17 upgrade experience that meets the company’s internal standards for performance and reliability.

Sony acknowledged the change in policy directly, stating that it had decided not to make the Android 17 upgrade available for the device and offering an apology to customers that the outcome falls short of its original product announcement.

Security Maintenance Continues Through 2028

Despite the cancellation of future major Android platform upgrades, Sony confirmed that support for the Xperia 10 VI has not ended entirely. The company stated that it will uphold its original commitment to long-term security maintenance.

Sony plans to continue delivering security patches for the handset across a four-year window, which is expected to keep the device protected until June 2028. While owners will miss out on the platform features and user interface changes expected in Android 17, critical vulnerability fixes and routine security updates will remain active through that timeframe.

Impact on Other Xperia Handsets

Addressing potential concerns across its broader customer base, Sony clarified that the underlying hardware issues are isolated to the Xperia 10 VI. The company noted that the storage configuration constraints apply strictly to the specific technical specifications of that model.

According to Sony, the decision does not affect the existing software update commitments made for other Xperia smartphones in its lineup. However, as full technical requirements for future Android platform releases remain undetermined ahead of general availability, the change highlights the persistent challenges manufacturers encounter when pledging multi-year operating system upgrades on midrange hardware.
