Virtual private network provider IPVanish has announced a major platform overhaul, transitioning from a standalone VPN service into a multi-layered digital security suite. The update incorporates a next-generation antivirus directly into the provider’s desktop clients alongside three new subscription tiers designed to offer users varying levels of threat defense under the brand’s updated mission to help users control their digital footprint.
Expanding Beyond Network Encryption
The strategic shift addresses the inherent boundaries of standard VPN technology against modern cyber threats. While virtual private networks encrypt internet traffic and mask IP addresses across public and private networks, they are not designed to halt malicious file execution or protect devices against downloaded threats.
“A VPN was never meant to be the whole answer,” said Subbu Sthanu, General Manager of Consumer Cybersecurity at IPVanish. “It protects your Internet connections and your privacy, but does not shield you from malicious downloads, fake login pages, and other threats.”
To solve the challenge of users needing to manage separate applications or disparate dashboards, IPVanish has integrated the newly introduced malware defense features directly into its existing desktop applications for both Windows and macOS.
Core Antivirus and Real-Time AI Capabilities
The integrated antivirus system includes comprehensive device protection tools. Users can run on-demand or scheduled scans across internal hard drives as well as connected external devices to identify and isolate dormant or active malware infections.
In addition to routine device scans, the software includes real-time protection powered by artificial intelligence. This background mechanism continuously monitors active processes to block hostile background tasks, intercept ransomware attacks, detect unauthorized changes in file downloads, and stop malicious software exploits before they execute.
Web Protection and Independent Benchmark Results
The updated security architecture also incorporates web-filtering technology. IPVanish’s Web protection system actively blocks intrusive advertisements, tracking scripts, and verified malicious websites. According to the provider, this network-monitoring defense remains fully operational even when the primary VPN connection is switched off.
The underlying security framework is powered by the VIPRE antivirus engine. According to test data from independent testing laboratory AV-Comparatives, the VIPRE Advanced Security engine recorded a 99.91% protection rate against 10,000 recent malware samples during its March 2026 Malware Protection Test. The performance earned the technology the laboratory’s highest Advanced+ three-star rating.
Subscription Structure and Platform Integration
To support the broader security ecosystem, IPVanish is reorganizing its pricing architecture into three distinct subscription tiers. This tiered approach is designed to give users flexibility in selecting the specific combination of privacy, malware defense, and backup tools required for their systems.
By combining high-tier antivirus detection and cloud backup capabilities with its foundational VPN software, the company aims to offer unified digital protection across internet connections and local file storage without requiring separate security tools.
