Public healthcare facilities across Lahore have experienced a massive influx of patients suffering from respiratory complications, with six major government hospitals reporting over 35,000 cases in a single week. The sharp increase in patient admissions corresponds with deteriorating smog levels and the rapid spread of seasonal viral infections throughout the metropolitan area.
Hospital Patient Distribution
According to healthcare sources, the surge in individuals presenting with symptoms consistent with influenza, COVID-19, and other seasonal flu variants has heavily burdened medical staff. Mayo Hospital recorded the highest volume during the seven-day window, treating more than 11,000 individuals for respiratory issues.
Services Hospital documented the second-highest caseload, admitting and examining more than 9,800 patients. Jinnah Hospital reported over 1,000 individuals seeking medical attention for similar health complaints. Additionally, thousands of patients visited Lahore General Hospital, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, and Children’s Hospital with matching symptoms.
Diagnostic Findings and Clinical Guidance
Hospital sources noted that rapid diagnostic testing performed on incoming patients confirmed positive cases of COVID-19, intensifying concerns regarding concurrent viral transmissions alongside environmental pollutants.
Addressing the clinical situation, the head of the Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Department at Services Hospital stated that while various newer COVID-19 variants may produce less severe clinical manifestations compared to earlier strains, individuals should not disregard emerging symptoms. The medical specialist urged those displaying flu-like signs to seek direct evaluation from qualified physicians rather than resorting to self-diagnosis or unprescribed home treatments.
Overlapping Factors and Health Advisories
Professor Shahbaz Ghori noted the diagnostic complexities created by current environmental and epidemiological factors, explaining that smog exposure, seasonal influenza, and COVID-19 can generate virtually indistinguishable respiratory indications. Because of these overlapping clinical presentations, Ghori stressed the urgent need for timely medical examinations and strict personal precautions.
In response to the concurrent spread of airborne pollutants and viral infections, public health guidance has advised local residents to minimize unnecessary outdoor exposure. Citizens have also been advised to wear protective face masks outdoors and observe consistent hygiene practices to lower their exposure to atmospheric pollutants and reduce transmission risks.
