Pakistan is grappling with an acute shortage of genuine influenza vaccines as distribution channels from prominent international and Chinese pharmaceutical manufacturers run dry, according to warnings issued by drug control authorities.
Depleted Inventories and Supply Bottlenecks
An official representing the Office of the Chief Drug Controller Punjab confirmed that vaccines from all major pharmaceutical suppliers are currently unavailable across the local market. Influenza vaccines developed by healthcare multinational Abbott and French manufacturer Sanofi are among the primary products impacted by the ongoing supply disruption.
According to the regulatory official, Abbott might not supply its influenza vaccine to Pakistan at all this year. Meanwhile, Sanofi might only deliver a limited consignment toward the end of November or in December, leaving a significant supply gap during a critical period.
Exhausted Alternatives from Chinese Manufacturers
Alternative supplies from Chinese vaccine developers have also proved insufficient to satisfy market demand. Chinese manufacturers including Sinovac and Shenzhen Innovax previously delivered limited quantities of their respective influenza vaccines, but these inventories have completely run out, failing to alleviate the broader shortfall.
Enforcement Actions Against Suspected Counterfeits
Drug control regulators noted that the persistent absence of authentic supplies has created an opening for illicit operators to introduce suspected counterfeit products into the commercial market.
In response, drug regulatory inspectors in Lahore conducted an operation that resulted in the seizure of a large stock of suspected counterfeit influenza vaccines. Authorities arrested two individuals in connection with the illicit distribution network.
The Punjab drug controller’s office reported that the seized substances appeared to be fraudulent duplicates of Influvac, an influenza vaccine associated with Abbott.
Consumer Guidance and Quality Control Precautions
Following the discovery of suspected fake pharmaceuticals, the Punjab drug control official issued an advisory urging the public to exercise strict caution. Consumers were instructed to procure influenza vaccines exclusively through licensed retail pharmacies.
The regulator also advised buyers to scrutinize product packaging thoroughly prior to purchase, specifically checking the manufacturer’s security seal and verifying official batch identification numbers. In addition, consumers and healthcare providers must confirm that vendors have adhered to mandated cold chain protocols during the transportation and storage of temperature-sensitive biological products.
