Google Pixel users are reporting growing issues when attempting to use contactless tap-to-pay features, as a software glitch appears to be disrupting Near Field Communication functionality across multiple handset models.

Intermittent NFC Disruptions

The reported issue causes NFC connectivity to cut in and out intermittently, preventing affected smartphones from completing transactions at payment terminals and transit gates. Users attempting to access digital passes or complete payments via digital wallets have found that their transactions fail unexpectedly during checkout or entry.

According to accounts from affected owners, the failure is recurring rather than a one-time malfunction. Several users reported that the disruptions began surfacing within the past week. In many cases, the only temporary resolution identified by users is performing a complete restart of the smartphone, which restores NFC capabilities only temporarily before the glitch recurs.

Multiple Pixel Generations Affected

The NFC connectivity issues do not appear to be confined to a single device release. Reports of tap-to-pay failures span across several Pixel hardware generations, including devices in the Pixel 8, Pixel 9, Pixel 10, and Pixel 11 product lineups.

Technical details shared by impacted device owners illustrate the presence of the bug on modern software builds. One owner of a Pixel 11 Pro XL indicated that the problem occurred while running Android 17 under build number CD1A.260905.001.B1, alongside Google Play Services version 26.34.36 (260400-981326859). Other affected users similarly reported having the latest system and software updates installed when encountering the payment failures.

Transit and Wallet Impacts

The timing of the malfunction coincides with recent feature rollouts for Google Wallet, which introduced expanded capabilities allowing users to add physical transit cards and manage account balances directly on their devices. While the feature was intended to let commuters navigate public transportation systems without physical cards, the sporadic NFC failures have left some travelers stranded at transit points.

At present, the root cause of the NFC disruption remains unknown, and it is unclear whether the breakdown stems from an underlying operating system component or an update to Google Play Services. Inquiries have been submitted to Google regarding the issue and potential remedies, though an official explanation or patch schedule has not yet been confirmed.
