A Virginia-based startup has launched Twitter.now, a new social media platform designed to resemble the original version of Twitter. Operated by Operation Bluebird, the platform has no connection to Elon Musk’s X Corp and is reviving the familiar Twitter branding while introducing several modern features.
Former Twitter Trademark Lawyer Behind Venture
The project is led by Stephen Coates, a former trademark lawyer for Twitter. Operation Bluebird argues that X may have abandoned certain rights to the Twitter name and related branding after changing the company’s identity to “X” in 2023.
Nostalgic Design With AI Verification
Twitter.now brings back familiar features such as replies and reposts, while also introducing an AI system called VERA. The system is designed to verify claims, provide supporting sources and context, and give posts a credibility score in an effort to combat misinformation.
X Corp Takes Legal Action
The launch has triggered a legal dispute, with X Corp accusing Operation Bluebird of unlawfully using the Twitter name and associated trademarks. A court hearing in April 2026 reportedly raised questions about some of X’s trademark claims, but the case remains unresolved.
Potential Impact on Tech Branding
The outcome could have wider implications for trademark rights in the technology industry, particularly when major companies abandon established names during rebranding efforts. The court’s eventual decision may help clarify how such trademarks are treated after a company shifts to a new identity.
