Defense Department Plans to Livestream Firing Squad Execution of Fort Hood Shooter

The execution of convicted Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan will be broadcast publicly, according to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and military officials.

The United States government is preparing to livestream the execution of convicted Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan, according to anonymous officials from the Department of Defense who spoke with the BBC and the Associated Press.

Hasan, a former U.S. Army major, was convicted of killing 13 people during a mass shooting at the Texas military base in 2009. The planned military execution was officially announced this week, setting a date for the sentence to be carried out by firing squad on December 3 at 2:00 PM Eastern Time.

Public Broadcast Confirmed by Defense Leadership

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth addressed the broadcast during an appearance on Real America’s Voice, confirming that the proceedings are intended to be accessible to the general public.

“We’ll make sure that people are able to watch it, that it’s public, because people need to understand that there’s serious consequences for these types of things,” Hegseth stated in the interview.

Platform Distribution Questions

The announcement raises immediate technical and policy questions regarding how and where the digital feed will be carried across the internet. Major digital streaming and video platforms—including YouTube, Twitch, TikTok, Meta, Rumble, and Kick—have not yet clarified whether their content moderation rules will permit the government broadcast to be hosted or shared on their networks.

None of the social media and video streaming providers responded to inquiries regarding their plans to carry or restrict the firing squad livestream ahead of the scheduled December date.
