SpaceX Acquires Low-Band Spectrum to Launch Major Mobile Carrier

The aerospace company plans to combine satellite and terrestrial infrastructure to directly challenge major cellular providers across the United States.

SpaceX has acquired a portfolio of low-band spectrum licenses in a strategic expansion designed to position its Starlink Mobile platform as a major telecommunications carrier in the United States. According to the company, the transaction will pave the way for a combined satellite and terrestrial network intended to compete directly against established nationwide operators including T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon.

Building a Hybrid Terrestrial and Satellite Architecture

Under the proposed rollout, SpaceX plans to implement a dual-layer communications architecture that integrates its orbiting satellite-to-mobile constellation with ground-based cellular infrastructure. The completion and deployment of the service remain subject to formal regulatory approval from the Federal Communications Commission.

A critical component of the acquisition is the nature of the radio frequencies obtained. The transaction encompasses up to 14 megahertz of paired spectrum within the 800 MHz band. In wireless telecommunications, low-band spectrum is prized for its propagation characteristics, particularly its capacity to travel over long distances and penetrate structural obstacles. SpaceX specifically noted that the 800 MHz frequencies will allow Starlink Mobile signals to reach through walls and physical buildings, addressing a major technical limitation inherent to direct satellite communications.

Expanding Direct-to-Device Capabilities

The latest frequency acquisition builds on SpaceX’s prior efforts to assemble wireless spectrum for mobile connectivity. The aerospace company previously acquired 2GHz spectrum from EchoStar to support its direct-to-device operations, securing crucial transmission assets across multiple frequency layers.

Alongside the spectrum acquisition, SpaceX is preparing an extensive orbital upgrade. The Federal Communications Commission has authorized plans for the deployment of 15,000 second-generation Starlink Mobile satellites. SpaceX reports that these V2 spacecraft will provide more than 100 times the bandwidth capacity offered by the network’s current generation of satellites.

Targeting Ubiquitous Domestic Coverage

By coupling low-frequency terrestrial capabilities with high-capacity orbital assets, SpaceX aims to eliminate cellular dead zones that persist across remote and underserved regions of the country. The company envisions a singular unified network that operates continuously regardless of geographical barriers.

SpaceX stated that the combination of the new low-band spectrum and the Gen2 satellite constellation positions Starlink Mobile to become the first network operator to deploy both satellite and terrestrial spectrum simultaneously. The company emphasized its goal of establishing a single network designed to provide users with reliable mobile connectivity indoors, outdoors, throughout existing cellular dead zones, and across all intermediate environments once regulatory approvals take effect.
