Authorities in Punjab have updated the province-wide driving license issuance process, allowing existing license holders to obtain an additional license from any district across the region. The decision eliminates a longstanding administrative requirement that compelled motorists to return to the original district where their initial license was issued.
Centralized Digital Verification
According to the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Traffic, the policy change received formal approval from the Punjab Inspector General of Police. Under the revised framework, drivers seeking a license endorsement or a second license category can apply and complete the procedure in any city, provided they successfully pass the mandatory driving test.
Officials noted that the policy update was made possible by the deployment and operation of an online verification system. The digital platform allows traffic authorities to access and authenticate license records seamlessly across administrative boundaries, removing the need for physical jurisdiction-bound paperwork.
Surge in Licensing Activity
Prior to this administrative update, license holders looking to expand their driving privileges were restricted to the specific district office that handled their initial credentialing. The removal of this jurisdictional constraint is designed to enhance public convenience and simplify procedural requirements for drivers traveling or residing outside their home districts.
Alongside the procedural reform, the Traffic Police disclosed that driving license issuances throughout Punjab have surged significantly, documenting a 43 percent increase in total licenses issued across the province during the current year.
