Artificial intelligence executive Shivon Zilis has publicly confirmed that she and Elon Musk have separated, revealing the end of their personal relationship on the social media platform X. The announcement arrived after an automated account, Big Tech Alert, highlighted that Musk had unfollowed Zilis on the service, prompting her to share public remarks regarding the development.

A Public Separation on Social Media

Responding directly to the automated tracking notice, Zilis confirmed the rupture in a quote-posted message. In her statement, she addressed the abrupt nature of the decision, writing that it is difficult to go from being in love to being let go within a week without warning, but added that such outcomes occur at times.

Zilis and Musk share four children together, contributing to Musk’s 14 known children across several relationships. In her reflections on their relationship, Zilis expressed appreciation for having offered Musk stability, care, and peaceful support, citing the challenging nature of his early life and internal struggles alongside his public ambitions for humanity. She noted that she sought to provide him with enduring and steady affection throughout their time together.

Zilis further stated that she had loved Musk intensely and credited him with imparting an immense amount of knowledge and personal meaning to her life. She acknowledged the weight of the loss while emphasizing her gratitude for the four children they brought into the world together.

Professional Overlap and Courtroom Testimony

Beyond their personal relationship, Zilis has maintained significant professional ties across Musk’s various enterprises. While under oath during a court proceeding earlier this year involving Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI and its chief executive Sam Altman, Zilis clarified her professional standing. Although she denied holding the formal title of chief of staff, she testified that she operated across Musk’s broader AI initiatives, encompassing Tesla, Neuralink, and OpenAI.

During that testimony, Zilis described spending between 80 and 100 hours per week working on behalf of Musk’s ventures, focusing primarily on identifying organizational and technical bottlenecks and executing solutions. When Musk took the stand during the same legal proceedings, he offered a contrasting description of her responsibilities, identifying her as his chief of staff before making an informal remark that generated open laughter within the courtroom gallery. At the time of that testimony, Musk was living with Zilis.

The integration of Zilis’s professional and personal life had previously surfaced during her tenure on the OpenAI board of directors. Zilis was an active board member when she gave birth to twins fathered by Musk, keeping the parentage confidential from colleagues at the AI research lab. The relationship and children became public knowledge only in 2022 after Business Insider reported on official court filings establishing Musk as their father, revealing the connection between an OpenAI board member and the leader of competing tech efforts.

Past Statements and Family Context

Prior to confirming the separation, Zilis had shared reflections on social media regarding a memoir published by Maye Musk, Elon Musk’s mother. In that post, Zilis noted that during difficult intervals she often reflected on the resilience displayed by the elder Musk, observing that Maye Musk had navigated far steeper hurdles with dignity and that the book served as a source of personal resolve.

Musk’s domestic arrangements and personal relationships have frequently intersected with legal and public scrutiny. Musk’s family office manager, Jared Birchall, has routinely managed privacy agreements and personal arrangements with the mothers of his children. Over the years, several other high-profile partners have engaged in public and legal disputes concerning parental status and corporate nondisclosure expectations.

Musk’s first wife, Justine Musk, previously wrote publicly about the dynamics of their marriage in an essay titled ‘I Was a Starter Wife’ before stepping away from commenting on the relationship. Musician Grimes, who has three children with Musk, engaged in a legal dispute to formalize a parental relationship and publicly aired grievances regarding visitation and communication barriers in 2023 via an appeal directed to biographer Walter Isaacson. Additionally, Ashley St. Clair, who shares a child with Musk, previously stated that she turned down a $40 million nondisclosure agreement from him and subsequently initiated legal action regarding deepfake images generated by xAI’s Grok system.

Neither Musk nor representatives for his companies have issued formal comments beyond his social media activity regarding the change in his personal status with Zilis.
