WhatsApp is actively developing another visual overhaul for its Android client, directing its latest interface refinements toward the bottom navigation bar. The upcoming changes aim to modernize how users interact with core sections of the messaging app by introducing a detached, floating navigation element.
A Floating Navigation Design
The revised interface was uncovered in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.38.10. While the software build contains the updated assets and code, the feature remains under active development and has not yet been rolled out to regular beta testers.
Under the new styling, the bottom navigation bar sits visibly detached from the display’s bottom edge rather than remaining anchored flush against it. The bar features more rounded corners and a distinct floating appearance, establishing a visual profile closer to the tab bar currently utilized in WhatsApp for iOS.
Despite these visual parallels, WhatsApp is not adopting Apple’s Liquid Glass design aesthetic in its entirety. The Android iteration is expected to adhere to platform-specific design conventions, incorporating significantly less transparency than the iOS version. Testing is underway across both light and dark themes, with the floating characteristics currently appearing more pronounced in the light interface.
Potential Navigation Role for Meta AI
Beyond cosmetic adjustments, the early interface builds suggest that WhatsApp could shift the positioning of its artificial intelligence features. Meta AI may secure a dedicated slot directly within the bottom navigation bar, moving beyond its previous implementation as an isolated floating shortcut.
WhatsApp has previously tested a dedicated Meta AI tab on Android, evaluating the bar as a centralized hub for AI tools. In recent months, developers have experimented with several distinct navigation arrangements, including trials involving a new Contacts tab alongside shifting placements for Communities, Updates, and Meta AI.
Because iterative testing is ongoing, the current interface arrangement remains subject to change. In screenshots extracted from the latest build, Meta AI appears simultaneously in more than one location, pointing to an ongoing evaluation regarding how the AI utility will ultimately fit into the completed user interface.
Development Status and Availability
WhatsApp has not announced an official timeline or public release date for the navigation overhaul. Because the redesign is still in early development stages, users can expect further layout adjustments before the new navigation bar reaches a wider audience.
